Stool seller won't let wrong delivery stand
Published: Friday, July 18, 2008
Dear Consumer Action:In February I selected and ordered three counter stools for my elderly parents' home in South Carolina, and paid about $750 for them. They were to have an "X" back. I paid an additional charge of $75 to have the stools shipped to my parents. The stools arrived 10 weeks later, but when I visited my parents in May I saw they were the wrong design. They had slatted backs instead of an "X" design.Upon returning to New Jersey, I went back to the store with the order form. The owner couldn't have been nicer. He agreed the order had been placed for the "X" back and said he would contact the factory and get back to me.Now it's July and I have heard nothing. - S.C., Hammonton
The owner told us the factory, which is a small family-owned business, is on vacation until the end of this month. When it goes back into production July 28, he said, he'll be able to give your parents a new delivery date. When the stools are delivered, your parents will need to re-box the incorrect stools for pickup. If they didn't keep the original packaging, they can use the boxes the correct stools arrive in, the owner said. It's always difficult when the purchaser of an item can't be there for the delivery, to check items before accepting delivery. In general it's best to refuse delivery of an incorrect item, rather than try to arrange a switch later. Please let us know how it goes.Still hope for TVDear Consumer Action:I have a problem with a TV repair shop that has had my large-screen TV for a month. I can't get a phone call back about it.If they can't repair the TV, I wish they would just call me and say so. I have left all my contact numbers, - C.D., AbseconWe spoke to the owner of the repair shop, who apologized for not getting back to you sooner. He said he doesn't have help with answering the phones right now, and admits to being behind in returning calls. He promised to get back to you in the next couple of days with information about the TV, which is made by a manufacturer that is good about supplying parts, he said.(Consumer Action will respond to each properly submitted letter about a problem or question, either in this column or by letter or phone.
