Stockton welcomes largest freshman class

GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP - Richard Stockton College welcomed its largest freshman class ever this fall, according to final enrollment numbers released by the college Tuesday. The 842-member class is 43 more than enrolled in the fall of 2007. Total undergraduate enrollment dropped by 100 to 6,667, but slightly more students, about 89 percent, are attending full-time. Dean of Enrollment Management John Iacovelli said the new freshmen class has higher SATs scores and high school class ranks than previous classes. At the September board of trustees meeting he reported that the average SAT score for all regular admission students was about 1,130, up from 1,105 in 2007. The college received 6,232 applications for the fall.Stockton President Herman J. Saatkamp Jr. said construction of new student housing has made the campus more accessible and appealing to students. The college added 375 beds this fall.More than 340 freshmen are getting Stockton scholarships paid by funds raised by the college and its foundation. The freshmen class also includes 13 students who were valedictorians and 16 who were salutatorians of their high school classes, Iacovelli said.
