Teens arrested in burglary try at retired weatherman's home

ATLANTIC CITY - Tom Lamaine, when he retired from his television meteorology career in May, probably envisioned days more relaxing than Tuesday. A police dog and a watchful neighbor helped bust a burglary attempt on his North New Hampshire Avenue house.

Lamaine took a mid-morning walk at about 10:40 a.m. but turned around quickly when he saw police cars in the neighborhood, police said. A neighbor had called 911 to say two young men had broken in through Lamaine's side door and left bicycles in the side yard.

An officer tried to enter through the same door but felt it lock as he placed his hand on the knob, police said. Lamaine gave police a door key, and Officers Keith Ferguson and Dean Dooley entered the house with Gunnar, a police dog.

Gunnar found a suspect under a stairwell; the 17-year-old kicked and punched the dog before being handcuffed. The dog then found Joel Jones, 19, in a bathroom, police said. Jones, too, fought back, grabbing Gunnar's collar and punching him in the head, police said. He was soon handcuffed and found to be carrying several pieces of jewelry, which Lamaine identified as stolen.

The dog was not seriously injured, Dooley said.

The suspects, both city residents, were treated at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Campus, and then taken to the Public Safety Building and charged with burglary, theft, resisting arrest and hindering apprehension, police said.

Jones is in the Atlantic County Jail in lieu of $20,000 bail; juvenile court personnel ordered the juvenile released to his parents.

Lamaine reported on sports, then weather, in nearly four decades at KYW-TV in Philadelphia. He bought the Atlantic City property in December 2003, property records show. Lamaine did not return a telephone message Wednesday afternoon.
