Chamber festival
reels in good time

The Avalon Chamber of Commerce will present its annual Seafood Festival from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at 30th Street and the beach.

This year's Avalon Seafood Festival will once again feature the chowder contest from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday. Several prominent restaurants from the Avalon region will be participating in the event.

This year will also include live music and entertainment as well as an assortment of vendors.

Cape May

Nominate homes
to historic awards

Applications are available for the Cape May Historic Preservation Awards, sponsored by the Cape May Historic Preservation Commitee at the City of Cape May Construction office. The deadline is Wednesday, Oct. 15.

A property can be self-nominated or nominated by another person. A panel of judges, experts in the field of historic preservation, will review all applicants.

The categories are: restoration of existing properties, addition to an existing property, adaptive use of an existing structure, new single family dwelling that conforms to the historic district; and commercial rehabilitation. All projects must have been completed by Jan. 31.

Each winner will receive a historic preservation tile. Awards will be given during the Historic Preservation Commission meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 27. Call Edie Klpsitz at 884-9561 for more information.

'Rounding third'
offers discounts

Cape May Stage and PNC have teamed up to offer a special evening of theatre for local veterans to attend "Rounding Third," at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15 at the Stage, Bank and Lafayette Streets. Tickets for that show are $12.50.

Tickets can be purchased by calling the box office at 884-1341.

Ocean City

Indian summer
block party set

The Indian Summer Weekend Festival will be held from Friday, Oct. 10 to Monday, Oct. 13. The highlight is the milelong block party from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, from Fifth to 14th Streets along Asbury Avenue. Over 400 juried crafters will participate. A new car show is set for Ninth Street between West and Asbury Avenues.

There will be live music from 1 to 4 p.m. all along the route, free pony rides at the Tabernacle also from 1 to 4 p.m. and many educational exhibits. First Night New Year's Eve admission buttons will be on sale for $14.

All city municipal lots will be free during the block party and there will be jitneys to transport visitors to and from the block party from the lots from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

There will be a seafood center set up at the Music Pier Saturday, Oct. 11 to Monday, Oct. 13 and boardwalk merchants will hold table sales from Friday to Monday. Downtown merchants will hold sidewalk sales from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday on Asbury Avenue.

The Bacon Brothers Band featuring film star, Kevin Bacon and his brother, Michael, will entertain at 8 p.m. Saturday.

The Ocean City Tabernacle will present a block party concert with Steve Green, recording artist and composer, at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11. Tickets are $15 in advance, $18 the night of the show or ten for $130. Stop at the Tabernacle or call 399-1915.

Blood drive held
for canine needs

The Humane Soceity of Ocean City will host Donna Oakley, founder and director of the Penn Animal Blood Drive, who will answer questions about the Pets Helping Pets Canine Blood Drive donor program at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22. Oakley was the driving force behind the aquisition of the Vetereniary Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania's first Bloodmobile in 1991.

There will be a canine blood drive will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28 at the Humane Society 1 Shelter Road, Ocean City. Healthy dogs between the ages of 1 and 6 who weigh over 55 pounds are eligible to be donors.

Donor dogs receive a complete blood and chemical workship at no cost and are entitlred to receive blood for the rest of their lives should they ever need it. To find out if you dog is eligible to donate or more information about the program or to register call Nancy Waddell at 398-7484.

Sea Isle City

City ready to host
Italian Festival

The city will hold an Italian Festival at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11 at Kix-McNutley's, 63rd and Landis Avenue. It coincides with the Columbus Day Parade set for 2 p.m. in front of the Italian American Club on JFK Boulevard.

From the bridge area, the parade will continue toward Landis Avenue where it will head south until it ends at the festival.

There will be live music, a children's area with activites and many vendors. Jerry Blavat will entertain rock and roll fans. For more information call 263-4461, ext. 230.

Octoberfest to rock
JFK Boulevard

The Sea Isle City Chamber of Commerce, in cooperation with the Sea Isle City Department of Community Services, will host their second annual Octoberfest at noon Saturday, Oct. 25 along the town's promenade at JFK Boulevard. It will be held rain or shine and will consist of many family activities inclduing free hayrides on the beach and live music.

There are also many free activities planned just for children, such as a giant moon bounce and obstable course, face painting and balloon creations. Children will also enjoy pony rides. pumpkin painting and a family treasure hunt.

There is also a costume contest planned, during which adults and children can win prizes for the best Halloween and Bavarian outfits. There will also be educational displays, a sand sculpting demonstration at noon and a dance party from 1 to 4 p.m.

A pie-baking contest is planned with the winners of the best homemade apple or pumpkin pies receiving blue ribbons. Entrants can drop off their pies from noon to 2:30 p.m. the day of the event at Vince's Restaurant, JFK Boulevard and Pleasure Avenue. A German beer garden will be open from 2 to 6 p.m. next to the promenade at 38th Street under a giant tent. The beer garden is open to adults only with proper identification. Admission is $15 per person, which includes a free beer mug and live music, For more information call 263-9090.

Stone Harbor

Art and music weekend set

Stone Harbor will hold an Art and Music Weekend from 10 a.m .to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 11 and 12 along 96th Street. The weekend will showcase the region's best local musicians and artists along the main line of Stone Harbor's shopping district.

There will also be displays from the area's most renowned local artists including painters, sculptors, potters and carvers. The event will be held rain or shine. Artists or musicians interested in participating are invited to call 368-6101 or e-mail: kgiulian@comcast.net.

West Cape May

Lima bean festival expands

For the first time, the West Cape May Lima Bean Festival will expand. In addition to having vendors, food and entertainment in Wilbraham Park, vendors will also line the street on Myrtle Avenue for the event, set for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11. Rain date is Sunday, Oct. 12.

There will also be live entertainment and the Lima Bean King and Queen will be crowned at 3 p.m. Proceeds benefit Wilbraham Park Trust and will be used for enhancement of trees and grounds of the park. This year the West Cape May Shade Tree Commission has completed extensive work in the park including removal of some diseased trees. These will be replaced with funds from the Lima Bean Festival. Wildwood

Traffic signals to change

Numerous traffic signals in the city will be changed into a flashingmode for the winter months. The change will become effective on Monday, Oct. 13. Police remind motorists to be aware of the changes and to remain alert and cautious as you approach all intersections.

Wildwood Crest

Paper shredder available

The Borough of Wildwood Crest has purchased a commercial paper shredder that residents are encouraged to use from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays to Fridays and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays at the Crest Pier Recreation Center, Healther and Ocean avenues. For more information, call 523-0202.
