It's Indian Summer in Ocean City

Published: Saturday, October 11, 2008

  From Press staff reports

OCEAN CITY - The city is hosting Indian Summer Weekend today. More than 400 crafters will set up shop on Asbury Avenue from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for the mile-long block party.

"It is a big hurrah, but it's not the last," Boardwalk merchant Charlie Caucci said. "We have a lot going on this fall."

Even so, no fall or winter event is as popular. Indian Summer Weekend is expected to draw an estimated 40,000 people to the island for shopping bargains, music and food. Tables and booths line Asbury Avenue from Fifth to 14th streets. Boardwalk stores will have table sales as well.

The Bacon Brothers will play tonight at the Music Pier. Tickets are sold out. But the city will boast other performers, including the Bubba Mac Blues Band at the Tigerlilly Dance Hall on Eighth Street. City spokesman Mark Soifer said organizing the block party is practically a full-time job for the Downtown Merchants Association.

Pony rides will be available at the Ocean City Tabernacle while the Ocean City Arts Center at 1701 Simpson Ave. will offer pumpkin painting.
