The winners of the 2nd and 3rd District congressional races far outspent their opponents on the way to victory. U.S. Rep. Frank LoBiondo, R-2nd, spent six times as much as his leading challenger, Democratic Cape May Councilman Dave Kurkowski, according to campaign finance reports filed for Thursday's federal deadline. State Sen. John H. Adler, D-Camden, more than doubled the spending of Republican Medford Mayor Chris Myers in winning the 3rd District seat. Adler won a close race, taking 52 percent of the vote to become the first Democrat to win the seat since 1882. Like many Democrats, he benefited from an increased turnout by Democratic voters that led to President-elect Barack Obama's big win. Adler also benefited from a huge cash advantage. All told, Adler spent about $2.7 million over the course of the campaign, burning through more than $1 million after Oct. 15, according to campaign finance reports. In comparison, Myers spent about $1.2 million on the campaign and also faced an expensive competition in the primary.
