Surf City beach munitions cleanup could last until Memorial Day
By DONNA WEAVER Staff Writer, 609-978-2015
Published: Jan 08, 2009

SURF CITY - A $17 million cleanup of World War I-era military munitions pumped ashore during a beach replenishment project may not be completed until the brink of the 2009 tourism season.

A large cleanup was conducted in 2007, and this small town on Long Beach Island, Ocean County, waited nervously through spring, hoping the beach sweep would be completed by the start of summer.

Now, in the cleanup of all cleanups - sifting the entire beach from the dune to the waterline - the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers again will be racing against the clock. This year, however, just one block of beach will be closed at a time.

Last month, the corps announced that the cleanup would start in early January, but it now is planned to begin at the end of the month. More
