Nuclear regulators say Oyster Creek radiation is at a safe level
Published: Thursday, March 20, 2008

From Press staff reports

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has reiterated its confidence that the level of radiation emitted from the Oyster Creek Generating Station is safe, according to a letter to Ocean County Administrator Alan Avery.

Avery had forwarded residents' concerns about the issue to the NRC Jan. 17. Avery was unavailable for comment Tuesday.

The NRC letter explained that the amount of radiation emitted by nuclear power plants is generally small, but regularly monitored to ensure they are within NRC standards.

An evaluation of radiological data is also a component of the license renewal process, which Oyster Creek is currently undergoing, according to the letter. The Lacey Township plant's license will expire in April 2009.
