Students studying Barnegat Bay find tropical visitors
Published: Thursday, October 09, 2008
A group of freshman students from the Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science in Stafford Township were out on Barnegat Bay Wednesday morning casting nets as part of their weekly field trip. "The kids log in what species they collect and keep a running record of what the water's like," said biology professor Dave Warner. The students found two rare fish called permits, which are usually found in tropical waters but were swimming around the warm bay water. The students took one back to put in a saltwater tank at the high school, and biology teacher Dave Werner said they plan to release it when the water warms up again at the end of June.
