Atlantic City Expressway tolls climbing 50 percent

Published: Friday, October 10, 2008

2 p.m. Update - Atlantic City Expressway operators on Friday approved a toll-hike plan that raises fares on the roadway between 50 and 60 percent, depending on the location.

The toll hikes -- which will raise $205 million to finance expressway and Atlantic City International Airport improvements -- will start sometime around the end of November or the beginning of December.

The South Jersey Transportation Authority, which runs the expressway and airport, also approved a 25-percent “tourism discount” for E-ZPass holders during the offseason.

The discount will be given from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays for periods that begin no later than Nov. 17 through May 18, 2009, and from Oct. 15, 2009, through May 18, 2010. The authorizing resolution said the discount “is intended to encourage tourism in the Atlantic County region and to promote increased E-ZPass usage.”

New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway operators were also schedule to vote Friday on toll-hike plans for those roadways.

Gov. Jon S. Corzine is expected to approve the toll hikes.
