Red Bull Riders Cup comes to Ocean City
By JON COEN
Published: Tuesday, May 13, 2008

With Monday's coastal storm still churning up the Atlantic Ocean, the Red Bull Riders Cup surf contest, slated for this afternoon in Ocean City, promises to get off to an exciting start.

The Riders Cup, in its third year, allows the top 32 high school surf teams from around the country to surf in eight regional events. The Riders Cup uses The Game format, borrowed from the National Surf League, to pit one high school against another.

Today, Ocean City hosts Southern Regional at 4 p.m. on the 8th Street Beach.

"The Game creates an easier understanding of surfing as a sport," explains its creator, professional surfer Brad Gerlach. "The entire game spans less than two hours, with three periods, coaches, and time outs. Family and friends are encouraged to come out and show support."

Last year, Ocean City won the New Jersey regional event, beating Atlantic City. The squad then traveled to California, where they missed making the final by mere points.

Ocean City is led by the Kelly brothers, senior Rob and junior Chris. With Brian Leiss, and Pat Westman returning from last year’s successful squad, the Red Raiders are the heavy favorites. Ocean City has won the New Jersey High School Championships 15 years in a row. Southern Regional has a considerably less-experienced team, with senior standout Pete Machotka away on a photo trip.

Manasquan and Middle Township meet on Wednesday. The winners of each match will meet in Thursday’s final. The overall regional winner competes at the National Championships at San Onofre State Beach, Calif., from June 13-15.

Winds are predicted to be moderate out of the north today, with six- to eight-foot waves. Should conditions be too dangerous for competition, Wednesday will be a doubleheader.
