When partying, playing or just visiting the southern New Jersey shore, your top priority should always be to remain comfortable. This weekend, you'll be getting very comfy with the help of your favorite pair of Fuzzy Bunny Slippers. One of the area's favorite summertime bands, the Fuzzy Bunny Slippers, are playing Friday and Saturday, May 30 and 31. So maximize your comfort level and make your way to both shows. On Friday you can catch the Fuzzies at The Deck at Trump Marina in Atlantic City at 9 p.m. When Saturday rolls around, head on down to Jack's Place, located on Ocean Drive in Avalon, as the Slippers rock Jack's house starting at 9 p.m.
Other comforts in life come in smooth, slow and jazz-packed packages, which is why the Somers Point Jazz Society is ready to kick off it's Blue Moon Brewery Annual Summer Jazz Series at 8:30 p.m. Sunday, June 1, at Gregory's Restaurant, located at 900 Shore Road in Somers Point. This Sunday, get jazzed up over the Mary Lou Newman Quartet. With Sonny Troy on guitar, Ace Tesone on bass and Grant MacAvoy on percussion, you'll hear all the good quality jazz you could ever need.
Newman has been playing jazz for more than 20 years, and has graced New York City's Apollo Theatre and has wowed crowds at the Kool Jazz Festival. Newman has played alongside great musicians like Tony Bennett, Charlie Spivak and The Temptations. This exciting jazz event is only $5 for non-Jazz Society members and free for those in the Somers Point Jazz Society. For further info, dial 609-927-6677 or go to www.spjazz.org.
Your Saturday afternoon can be filled with good food and good sounds, while your evening can take you back to the days of Queen. For starters, head over to the Atlantic City Race Course in Mays Landing for a Battle of the Bands and a finger-lickin' BBQ Cook-Off. This first annual battle and BBQ benefits the non-profit Charter-Tech School for the Performing Arts in Somers Point. Bands will take the stage for judgment from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Included on the bill is local favorite Apocket Bleu, which has played several battle of the band competitions and fared well. The BBQ Cook-Off is sanctioned by the Kansas City BBQ Society. Being an important part of the community never sounded and tasted so good.
By the time you've had your fill of BBQ favorites and local, original acts, head on over to the Atlantic City Hilton Theater for the final show of the Fantasy Concert Series. The Hilton is going out with a bang as Almost Queen performs live at 9 p.m. From an intense light show to outrageous costumes, Almost Queen is practically the real thing. Doors open at 8:30 p.m., and tickets are $10.
And last, but certainly not least this weekend, be sure to help out a local family in need. The Cundiff family is suffering a terrible heartache as their 5-year-old daughter, Kira, is receiving treatment for a brain tumor. Maynard's Caf, located on 9306 Amherst Ave. in Margate, is hosting a fundraising event for the Cundiff family 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday.
