An Atlantic City man is dead after he was struck by a vehicle while crossing Route 30 in a wheelchair Monday night, police said.

The 45-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, Sgt. Monica McMenamin said. Police did not release the victim’s name.

The suspected vehicle, which was described as a 1999 grey Nissan compact car, was heading east on Route 30 and struck the victim about 9:30 p.m. at Pennsylvania Avenue, McMenamin said. The vehicle fled the scene via Virginia Avenue and was later found by police, unoccupied, at Maryland and Atlantic avenues.

A suspect was apprehended and taken to the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center's City Campus, Sgt. Monica McMenamin said. He was interviewed and released, pending further investigation.

Blood and urine tests to check for alcohol and drugs are standard in fatal crashes, she said.

His name will not be released until he is officially charged, she said.

Police cordoned off the eastbound lane of Route 30 and parts of Pennsylvania Avenue. Family of the victim was present at the crime scene.

The Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Fatal Crash Unit and Atlantic City police are investigating. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 609-347-5744 or Atlantic County Crime Stoppers at 609-652-1234.
