GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP — The Galloway Democratic Club called for a restoration of pride in the township as officials announced their endorsements for council candidates in 2013 on Monday.
The slate includes incumbent Councilman Jim McElwee, Bill Montag, Cliff Sudler, and Mike Suleiman, who will be running as the “Restore Galloway” team.
Three seats occupied by Republican incumbents — Mayor Don Purdy, Councilwoman Whitney Ullman and Councilman Tom Bassford — will expire at the end of the year.
“I am excited to be joined by these three qualified and energetic candidates. Galloway will have a bright future with their leadership,” McElwee said in a statement Monday.
Democrat Jim Gorman and Republicans Tony Coppola and Brian Tyrrell also serve on the council.
The township has had a Republican majority for almost 10 years and the club said Monday that the municipality has endured higher taxes, several lawsuits, reductions in township services and embarrassing news headlines.
“The people of Galloway are sick of layoffs and lawsuits, the club’s statement said. The “Restore Galloway” team called for new, fiscally responsible members of council who will help bring back the pride that Galloway deserves.
The township has settled two lawsuits since January, totaling $500,000. They settlements were for lawsuits filed by former employees Lisa Tilton and Jody Smith.
Since 2012, McElwee has served on the township council after he was elected in a special election. He is employed as a supervisor for the South Jersey Transportation Authority.
Montag lives in the township’s Smithville section and is a construction manager for South Jersey Gas. Montag previously was employed by the Galloway Township Public Works Department for 10 years
Sudler lives in South Egg Harbor and is a 23-year veteran of the Atlantic County Sheriff’s office.
Suleiman is a Legislative Aide to state Sen. Jim Whelan. He is also a member of the Galloway Township Superintendent’s Advisory Team. Suleiman has been ranked as one of Atlantic City Weekly's “Top 40 Under 40.”
