The Penn Relays Carnival

Today and Saturday at Franklin Field in Philadelphia

Braheme Days Jr. of Bridgeton tops the list of local athletes who will compete in individual events at this historic meet.

The senior will try to become the first local athlete to win back-to-back Penn Relays titles. He is the top seed in the shot put at 2:30 p.m. today. Days won the event with a put of 68 feet, 8.5 inches last year. Only six local athletes have won Penn Relays individual events. They are Bill Hartley of Southern Regional (1976 pole vault); Lou Gordon of Bridgeton (1995 shot put); Robert Jordan of Millville (1999 high jump); Paul Klemic of Mainland Regional (2000 high jump); John Richardson of Ocean City (2003 mile); and Danielle Tauro of Southern Regional (2006 mile).

Holy Spirit is the six-time defending champion. The tournament is named after the former Pleasantville coach and Oakcrest athletic director.

This event raises funds for the American Cancer Society. The event's goal is also to raise awareness about the disease. There will be Phillies and Mike Trout memorabilia auctioned off.

Softball

Hammonton Invitational Tournament

Saturday at Hammonton High School

This prestigious event is down to its final four and all remaining teams - No. 1 Washington Township, No. 5 Eastern, No. 6 Shawnee and No. 10 Vineland - are in The Press Elite 11. Vineland is trying to become the first Cape-Atlantic League team to win the tournament since St. Joseph in 2008.

An interesting nonconference matchup as the Rams try to stay undefeated. Southern is led by Tyler Lipositz, with 13 goals and 23 assists for 36 points, and Dylan Jinks, with 24 goals and nine assists for 33 points.
