PHILADELPHIA - The Phillies have struggled to score this season. They have scored two runs or less in 10 of their 21 games.

The team’s offensive statistics are not pretty.

Philadelphia enters today ranked 10th in the 15-team National League with 73 runs scored. The Phillies also are No. 10 in the league in home runs with 14 and in slugging percentage at .374. They are 12th in onbase percentage at .300.

What impact will the floundering offense have on the team’s pitchers? Will it cause them to try to be too perfect?

Phillies manager Charlie Manuel is worried that could happen.

“I think that definitely happens, and I don’t know what you can do to stop that,” Manuel said after the Phillies lost to the Pittsburg Pirates 2-0 Tuesday night. “The pitcher feels like the team is not going to get him any runs. I’ve been in this game a long time and pitchers definitely feel that.

“He goes out there and tries to be too fine. He tried to overdo it. We have to get our offense going.”

The only consolation is the Phillies feature veteran pitchers who should be able to handle non-existent run support.

Cole Hamels, Tuesday’s losing pitcher, expressed no frustration with the Phillies lack of offense in that game.

“Maybe four or five years ago it would have been frustrating,” he said. “I know what I can control and what I can’t. If I’m able to go out, make pitches, pitch deep in the game and limit the game, that’s all I can do.”

The Phillies host the Pirates at 7:05 p.m. today.
