Atlantic City Mayor Lorenzo T. Langford will formally announce his re-election campaign at 5 p.m. Tuesday, in his campaign headquarters at 1125 Atlantic Ave.

Langford, 57, is a former casino pit boss turned City Councilman who initially won mayoral election in 2001. After losing in 2005, he returned following then-Mayor Bob Levy’s scandal-plagued administration and resignation, serving the final year of Levy’s term. Langford won reelection in 2009, saying then it was his final race.

Since then, Langford has been a visible and vocal opponent of the Atlantic City Tourism District and Gov. Chris Christie.

The mayor has compared the casino-heavy district to Apartheid-era South Africa. He told national television he wished to resolve his dispute with the popular Republican governor over Hurricane Sandy evacuations “mano-a-mano.”

Langford is expected to face Atlantic County Freeholder Charles T. Garrett and retired Atlantic City Police Officer David Davidson for the Democratic nomination in the June 4 primary.

No Republicans have announced their intention to run for mayor.
