The Rowan University football team took a 20-point lead and held on to beat The College at Brockport 20-16 on Saturday in Brockport, N.Y., in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game. Profs quarterback Paul Hamersma completed 17 of 26 passes for 167 yards and one touchdown.

Rowan is 3-1 overall and 2-0 NJAC. The Golden Eagles dropped to 1-3 overall and 0-1 NJAC. Brockport is leaving the conference following this season.

Rowan's Withler Mercelin (18 carries for 58 yards) opened the scoring with a 21-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. The Profs went up 20-0 in the second quarter as Hamersman threw three yards to wideout Ed Eisenhart for one score, and Matt Dortsch ran for a four-yard TD.

Brockport made it closer with all 16 of its points in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Ty Spoldt threw touchdown passes of nine and six yards to wide receiver Jake Spalik.

The Golden Eagles drove with under three minutes left but Rowan linebacker Darren Dungee intercepted a pass in the end zone to end the threat. On Rowan's next series, Hamersma ran out of his own end zone for a safety to burn the clock and earn a free kick.

Rowan tight end Joe Marchiani (Holy Spirit) had one catch for three yards. Defensively for the Profs, defensive back Jared Sanchez (Hammoton) had six tackles (4 solos, 2 assists), lineman Josh Popper (Holy Spirit) had six tackles (1 solo, five assists), defensive back Kurt Kingett (St. Augustine Prep) added four tackles (2 solos, 2 assists) and two pass breakups, and lineman Sebastian Ljoka (Holy Spirit) had two tackle assists.
