A 27-year-old Cape May Court House man died after the vehicle he was a passenger in crashed into trees along Shunpike Road on Friday in the Burleigh section of Middle Township, police said.

Jibreel Masud was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which police said was caused by drunken driving.

The driver, Bruce Moffitt Jr., 23, also of Cape May Court House, was charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, second-degree leaving the scene of a crash resulting in death and first-degree aggravated manslaughter. Moffitt, who was treated for minor injuries, was held on $250,000 bond.

Moffitt was driving a red Jeep Grand Cherokee north on Shunpike Road in the area of Oyster Road when he lost control of the vehicle at about 8:30 p.m., police said. Moffitt, who left the scene of the crash, was found a short time later, police said.

Fire companies from Cape May Court House, Goshen and Rio Grande worked at the scene. The Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office and Middle Township Major Crime Unit were investigating the case.
