PHILADELPHIA – As baseball’s July 31 non-waiver trade deadline nears, the Phillies have another need – a center fielder.

Philadelphia will be without starting center fielder Ben Revere for extended period after he broke a bone in his right foot. Revere fouled a ball off his foot in the 11th inning of Saturday afternoon’s 5-4 loss to the Chicago White Sox.

"It's tough,” Revere said before the Phillies played the White Sox this afternoon.  “I won't be out there for my teammates, but I want to be able to support them. I'm just going to keep my head held high, that's all I can do, and hopefully, like I said, this thing will heal quickly."

Philadelphia placed Revere on the 15-day disabled list this morning. The outfielder will see a specialist Monday.

“It doesn’t sound good,” Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said this afternoon. “I don’t know if it’s displaced, but I think it’s going to take a while.”

Revere’s injury is a big loss for the Phillies. He leads the team in batting with a .305 average. The Phillies acquired the 25-year-old Revere in an offseason trade with the Minnesota Twins. Revere started slowly, batting .200 in April. But since May 1 he’s been of the top hitters for average in all of baseball with a .347 average (78-for-225).

The Phillies started John Mayberry Jr. in center field today. Mayberry also started in Saturday night’s 2-1 win over Chicago, hitting a home run.

Amaro said the Phillies would trade for a center fielder if he is an upgrade offensively or defensively over Mayberry Jr.

“John is a good center fielder. He’s solid,” Amaro said. “He’s not a plus defender. If we can get a better one, we will.”

The Phillies are also shifting minor league second baseman Cesar Hernandez to center field to see if he can handle the position. Amaro said Hernandez was chosen for the experiment over fellow minor league Freddy Galvis because Hernandez is faster.

“He’s going to play there exclusively for the next week to 10 days to see if that’s a possibility for us,” Amaro said.
