Police have arrested an Atlantic City man accused of aggravated assault on a 3-month-old baby.

Lavarrel W. Thompson, 26, was arrested Thursday at a home in Pleasantville by detectives with the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Crimes Against Children Unit.

Authorities say Thompson, who lived in the Chelsea Village Apartments, brought the unresponsive baby to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Campus, on Oct. 25.

Because the baby showed signs of trauma to the head, the hospital notified authorities, who opened an investigation, culminating in Thompson’s arrest, the Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement.

Thompson was charged with second-degree aggravated assault and second-degree endangering the welfare of a child. The charges allege that Thompson shook the baby, resulting in the infant’s injuries.

He is being held at the Atlantic County jail on $100,000 full cash bail set by Superior Court Judge Max A. Baker.

The baby is being treated at Children’s Specialized Hospital in New Brunswick, Middlesex County.

The release does not state Thompson’s relationship to the infant but says Thompson was responsible for the boy.

Thompson may have his first appearance in court next week, but it has not been scheduled, prosecutor’s spokeswoman Haleigh Walz said.
