One of southern Ocean County's premier art shows takes place this weekend when Pine Shores Art Association opens the doors to its Art Patron Show and gala reception.

The event takes place from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 21, at the Stafford Fire House, 133 Stafford Ave., in Manahawkin.

Fifty-nine Pine Shores' artists donated original paintings to this second-annual fundraising event. The collection includes top names in the national art scene, such as Tom Rutledge, Bob Heyer, Carol Freas and Pat Morgan, and well-known local artists.

Mikkey Tarantino is one of the contributing artists. She is a signature member of the New Jersey Watercolor Society and the Garden State Watercolor Society, winning many awards. A resident of both Long Beach Island and Charles Town, W. Va., Tarantino is a popular leader of watercolor workshops at Pine Shores. Her paintings are shown in Nita Leland's books, "The New Creative Artist" and "Confident Color" published by North Light Books.

Besides being open to the public, the Art Patron Show is unique because it features a twist in which 59 members of the community paid $50 each to be entered into a lottery to take home one of the original paintings displayed. Random drawings will determine the order patrons will make their selection. Every work of art in the show has a value far exceeding the $50 each patron paid in advance of the event, show organizers said.

The fundraiser furthers Pine Shores' year-round efforts to continue fine arts in the community through classes for all ages and community outreach programs.

General admission is free and includes a reception with the artists. Call 609-242-0799 or go to PineShoresArtAssociation.org.
