‘Recent Paintings,’ an exhibit by local artist Amanda McCutcheon, can be seen through May at Gallery 50 Inc. in Bridgeton.

Updated

Each portrait by artist Amanda McCutcheon tells a story, becoming both a window and a mirror into the life of her subject.

In her newest exhibit, titled "Recent Paintings" and currently at Gallery 50 Inc. in Bridgeton, the artist presents a series of "stories" that she hopes speaks to the viewer "across boundaries of time, geography, class, race and religion."

An opening reception introducing McCutcheon and her works will be held at the gallery from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 3. The event is free.

"These paintings are the product of my ongoing interest in the representational tradition in American art, and portraiture in particular," McCutcheon writes in her artist's notes for the exhibit. "I'm constantly working to synthesize the formal aspects of painting with the psychological complexity of the subject."

McCutcheon has taught painting and drawing privately for more than 20 years. Her influences include movies, literature, travel experiences and a broad roster from art history. She has accepted commissions and has shown in galleries and other public venues from Philadelphia to Maine and her work is represented in public and private collections.

Having lived in New York City, Maine and Philadelphia, she now resides on a farm in southern New Jersey where she paints and raises organic seedlings.

Her paintings will be on display through the end of May.
