The Noyes Museum of Art of The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey highlights local, regional and in-state artwork with its Associate Artist Exhibition, on view to Jan. 1.
Abstract painter James Kent is one of the artists on display.
A telecommunications systems engineer who felt his creative side was being crushed by the daily demands and diversions of adult life, Kent devoted himself to his art in 1994. He currently fills his time with painting in his studios in Oceanport and Mount Holly, teaching abstract painting, in addition to engineering.
He describes his paintings as "non-representational," meaning they are not meant to portray anything we see around us, but require careful study on the part of the viewer. A long look will reveal details and textures, he explains. His paintings generally show a large, somewhat centrally located "calm" space surrounded by borders filled with "edgy," graffiti-like visual activity.
Other artists in the exhibit are: Robert Baum, Jacqueline Boyd, Lisa C. Budd, Lydia Crompton, Vicky Culver, Susan Pitak Davis, Peg Dittmar, Barbara Ferrera, Stephen Garraty, Beverly Golembeski, Robert Grunke, Dwight K. Harris, Albert D. Horner, Rae Jaffe, Ted Jaslow, Debra Kayata, Dennis Loughlin, Annette Maynard, Jack D. McGovern, Gary Moore, Betsey Regan, Richard Samuelson, Christina Sanes, Judith Saylor, Mary Trivelli Schatz, Eileen Schreiber, Seppo Siimes and Robin Wesner.
