A number of interesting species of fish have been caught or spotted in South Jersey waters recently. A couple of weeks back, a school of what was described as baby barracuda went splashing through Townsend Inlet. Since then, they have been seen or caught in back bays throughout the area.

Inshore trolling adds to the fishing scene when mahi mahi move in closer to the beaches to mix it up with bluefish and bonito - and sometimes tuna. Almost all of the reports received lately mentionedmahi  mahi (dolphin), including one about a 35-pounder caught 6 miles off the beach.

Shep on Fishing: McGinley family enjoying some great times on the water

The McGinley family of Galloway Township family made it a sweep of the three Chelsea Cup series in Atlantic City. Ashley, an 8-year old, and her 37-year-old dad Shawn picked up first-place awards in all three, and even went one-two for heaviest fish in one of them.

Lots of local anglers would rather tool around the back bays in a boat than go out in the ocean. Al Rocks of Egg Harbor Township loves hopping into his 1966 17-foot Boston Whaler Montauk "Brutus II" and taking a short ride into the waters from Great Egg Harbor Inlet to Great Egg Harbor River.

Shep on Fishing: John Koegler grabbing plenty of blues off LBI

John Koegler ran a charter on the Starfish off Long Beach Island Tuesday, July 5, and they were trolling - chasing sand bar sharks and catching small bluefish. Koegler, who also has Pop's Pride for six or fewer passenger charters, trolled small spoons for 1 to 1 1/2-pound blues for a charter that included kids.
