Weekend in Wildwoods offers everything from monster trucks to chili

Festivals, car shows, fishing and ice cream contests - there is no shortage of things to do in the Wildwoods this weekend. Head down to Wildwood this weekend to take your pick of multiple family events, which kick off Friday, Sept. 28, with the annual Olde Time Italian Festival and end Sunday, Sept. 30, with a chili and chowder cook-off at Morey's Piers.

An Olde Time Italian Festival

Head to Fox Park on Friday, Sept. 28, and Saturday, Sept. 29, for crafts, games, traditional Italian cooking and free live entertainment all weekend long.

The annual Olde Time Italian Festival runs from 5 p.m. to midnight on Friday and noon to midnight on Saturday. A procession and mass will take place at 5 p.m. Friday and entertainment begins at 6 p.m.

Wild Thang Chrysler Car Show

Thunderbolts, New Yorkers, PT Cruisers - if it's a classic Chrysler car, chances are you'll see it on the Wildwood Boardwalk this weekend.

The two-day annual Wild Thang Chrysler Car Show takes place Friday, Sept. 28, and Saturday, Sept. 29, with Chrysler cars displayed on the Wildwood Boardwalk on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. free for spectators. A special "glow show" and barbeque for members of the Chrysler Owners Group will take place Friday at the Imperial 500 Motel in Wildwood.

Beach Monster Mash Truck Races

Bigfoot, Backdraft and Megasaurus are back again - and they want revenge.

The Beach Monster Mash Truck Races take place Friday, Sept. 28, through Sunday, Sept 30, and will feature jam-packed monster truck shows on the beach with all the favorite monster truck legends that draw thousands of spectators.

Races take place at Lincoln Avenue beach in Wildwood, where monster trucks will square off on a custom beach race course for their chance to win the title of "King of the Beach." Monster trucks will include Bigfoot, Viper, Instigator, XDP, Storm Damage, Hurricane Force, Backdraft, Eradicator and Megasaurus. A free Friday night "pit party" starts at 5 p.m., where spectators can see Tuff Truck competitions and a quad expedition.

Saturday races begin at noon and 7 p.m. Sunday races begin at noon. The weekend also will feature "Team Danger" motorcycle stunts with Louis "Rocket" Re and Doug Danger. Monster truck rides also will be available.

Mid-Atlantic Police & Fire Survivors Weekend

Come join a show of support during a weekend of events honoring the survivors of law enforcement officers and firefighters who gave their lives in the line of duty. The Mid-Atlantic Police & Fire Survivors Weekend focuses on survivors from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. Events begin 4:45 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28, with the delivery of a ceremonial wreath at the North Wildwood municipal boat ramp at 5th & New York avenues.

On Saturday, Sept. 29, beginning at 5:45 p.m., there will be a display and demonstration featuring a New Jersey State Police Helicopter, K9 units and fire equipment at 1st and Surf avenues. A candlelight vigil at North Wildwood's Municipal Oceanfront Amphitheater at 2nd and Ocean Avenues will take place at 7 p.m., followed by an interment at sea of the ceremonial wreath.

Annual Pennsauken Surf Fishing Club Tournament

Come and celebrate 57 years of fishing on Wildwood's Beaches on Saturday, Sept. 29. Registration for the annual Pennsauken Surf Fishing Club Tournament takes place at the Anglesea Firehouse at 2nd and New Jersey avenues in North Wildwood at 6 a.m. Teams and individuals are welcome. Tournament runs from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. There is an entrance fee for participants.

Ed's Funcade Treasure Hunt & DQ Ice Cream Eating Contest

Bring the children for a free treasure hunt and a Dairy Queen ice cream eating contest on Saturday, Sept. 29, at Ed's Funcade, located on the Boardwalk at 23rd Avenue in North Wildwood. Morey's Piers Souper Sunday Closing Day and Chili/Chowder Cook Off

What would fall be without the smell of chili simmering on the stove? Get a taste of the Jersey Shore on Sunday, Sept. 30, during Morey's Piers' second annual Souper Sunday Chili and Chowder Cook Off, starting at 11 a.m. on the Boardwalk at Mariner's Landing.

Participants can register their chili or chowder recipes for free in one of the two categories - individual or professional (for restaurants and caterers). Each team that enters the competition receives two all-day, unlimited ride passes to Morey's Piers and the chance to have their entry named best chili or chowder. Plaques will be awarded to the winners in each division. There will be a $500 cash prize for the best overall.

The competition will begin 11 a.m. Sunday with a two-hour cooking period. Public tastings will begin at 1 p.m. Guests can purchase tasting kits online at www.store.moreyspiers.com for $10. Tasting kits include five taste tickets, tasting cups and a guest's choice ballot.
