Singer-Songwriter Conference offers more than 50 performers
Print this ArticleThe Cape May Singer-Songwriter Conference rears its lovely head for a second year of incredible fun and even more incredible music. The two-day musical extravaganza kicks off on Friday, March 27, and is quite literally taking over the city. With more than 50 artists rocking more than 15 Cape May bars, lounges, restaurants and stages, you'll have a hard time deciding where you need to be and when to hear the latest and greatest singer-songwriters southern New Jersey has to offer.
The Cape May SS showcase gets started with a tribute to Robert Hazard, who died in August. The tribute takes place inside The Ballroom at Congress Hall, which is located at the Washington Street Mall. Other special events happening throughout the weekend at The Ballroom include Laura Warshauer (9:45 p.m. Friday), Phil Cody (8 p.m. Saturday, March 28), and the 2009 Keynote Address made by Chris Barron, former frontman of The Spin Doctors (see interview on Page 18). Call 609-884-8421.
Also rocking the ballroom is Michelle Dawn Mooney. Best known as the anchor on NBC Channel 40, Mooney's primary influence came from Chris Jay, a Cape May native who created her first demo with her in Los Angeles. Catch Mooney at The Ballroom on Friday at 10:20 p.m.
The Other Room inside Carney's is also another hot spot for this weekend's singer-songwriter festivities. Major acts such as Kaydi Johnson, 7Envy, Kagero and Telling on Trixie are playing throughout the weekend, as well as Emma Cook, another Canadian native who has wowed crowds throughout her home country and is soon to wow Cape May. Cook, who's US debut album, "Hit and Run," hits stores Tuesday, March 31, will be giving Cape May a sneak preview of her latest work this weekend at The Other Room at Carney's on Saturday at 9:15 p.m.
Cook has never played Cape May before, but is looking forward to the challenge: "In my experience with these events, it really helps to reach a target audience, and I appreciate the venues that allow us to network and reach out to the right people with out genre of music," Cook reveals.
Cook is known for her Joni Mitchell-esque sound with a lyrical style like Bob Dylan, and promises southern New Jersey that the event will be full of wonderful talent. The Other Room at Carney's is located at 401 Beach Ave. in Cape May, and can be reached at 609-884-4424.
Another group ready to rock you, Ready In 10, hails from Long Island, N.Y., and has been featured on the International Acoustic Music Awards and released a CD, "Face The World." Ready In 10 tours all over the United States, hitting big festivals such as the Red Gorilla Music Festival in Austin, Texas, and is now headed to Cape May. Catch Ready In 10, along with other artists such as Lisa Cavallaro, Hudson Rail Company and Wonderlust, all at the Ugly Mug, located at 426 Washington St. Call 609-884-3459. Ready In 10 performs 8 p.m. Friday.
The Cape May Singer-Songwriter Conference is free and open to the public, but also offers daytime events that you need to pre-register for. There are registration discounts for senior citizens, students and people in the military. Visit www.sscapemay.com for all information regarding each and every event as well as ticket pricing.
