Somers Point will be one hot city this weekend. The annual Winter Jazz Concert Series showcases a double feature of syncopated beats and smooth jazz sounds at Mac's Restaurant and Gregory's Restaurant & Bar.
The evening begins 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, at Mac's with Itutu featuring Chris Brown. This show marks Itutu's southern New Jersey debut alongside special musical guest Brown. Brown began his music career as a Marine Corps drummer, and is currently the principal saxophonist in the New Jersey Army National Guard. The renowned musician is also a jazz history professor at Rutgers University in New Brunswick.
Brown has worked with such musical legends as Wynton Marsalis, Terry Gibbs, Buddy DeFranco, Ray Charles, Benny Golson, Conrad Herwig and many more. Itutu's lineup also features Lance Murphy on tenor and soprano sax, Alex Collins on piano and Yasushi Nakamura on bass. Mac's is located at 908 Shore Road. Call 609-927-2579.
The Saturday show continues at 8:30 p.m. over at Gregory's where the Doug Martin Quintet, also billed as Out of Business, will begin its set of live jazz. Martin is also known for his extensive background in jazz, which began at the age of 4. Martin has been jamming for the past 30 years with the likes of Phil Woods, Michael Pedicin, James Williams and George Mesterhazy. Out of Business also includes Michael Pedicin on tenor saxophone, Joe Breidenstine on trumpet, Jim Ridl on piano and Andy Lalasis on bass.
The Somers Point Jazz Society presents both shows for a combined ticket price of $10. Admission is free for high school and college students and members of the Somers Point Jazz Society. For more information on the Jazz Society, go to www.spjazz.org. For Gregorys, at 900 Shore Road, dial 609-927-6665.
The weekend of jazz double features isn't confined to Somers Point. Cousin Mario's In Mays Landing and Fuze Restaurant in Avalon will host another local jazz hit, Pauline Bennick. Bennick's smooth sounds are accompanied by guitarist Frank Coffman at both locations.
