SOMA NewArt Gallery in Cape May opens its most anticipated exhibit of the summer season on Saturday, Aug. 24 featuring two of the gallery's top producing artists, Stan Sperlak and Victor Grasso.
Sperlak and Grasso will introduce their latest work to their collectors and fans at the artist opening reception from 6 to 9 p.m. The public is invited to meet the artists and enjoy an evening of art, light food and drink.
Exhibiting in Gallery I and II, Sperlak returns for his sixth consecutive show at SOMA. His new pastels, collectively titled "Breaking The Horizon," reflects the award-winning artist's love of the skies, marshes, oceans and the fields of South Jersey.
"Paint what you know, what you see and how it makes you feel," Sperlak writes in his artist's notes for the exhibit.
A juried member of the Pastel Society of America, the Mid-Atlantic Plein Air Painters, the Maryland Pastel Society and Riverfront Renaissance Center for the Arts in Millville, Sperlak's work is also in the permanent collection of the Noyes Museum in Galloway Township. He teaches pastel painting in the plein-air tradition at his many pastel workshops throughout the year.
Grasso is a special guest artist at SOMA. His exhibit in Gallery III, "The Great White Hunt," is from new works in his "Tooth and Nail" series depicting animal claws and teeth to create spiral patterns. Also in this exhibit, Grasso presents two new ink drawings, "The Way the Sea Was" and "Whiskey Ted," both executed in night black ink.
The exhibit will be on view to Sept. 22.
