Printmaker Janet Payne and photographer Tina Giaimo share the spotlight Friday, Dec. 2 in "Ocean Treasures," the first show in the new Harbor Gallery at the Nature Center of Cape May.
The women, both popular and award-winning local artists, often team up for exhibits and shows. Both artists say they are inspired by the beauty of nature.
A "Meet the Artists" reception will be held 6 p.m. Friday, and the public is invited to view the artwork and check out the gallery in the newly renovated Trucksess Welcome Center. Plans call for new exhibits to be featured monthly by local artists with a reception held on the first Friday of each month.
Payne, of West Cape May, specializes in hand-tinted block prints and mixed-media prints of fish using an ancient Japanese printing technique called Gyotaku. The method was first used to record the true size and species of fish caught by Japanese fishermen in the 1800s, where live fish were inked while lying in the bottom of a boat and printed on used newspapers, says Payne. Although she prints her fish on acid-free Japanese rice paper, Payne says she uses watercolor and pastels in her creations.
Giaimo, who has photographed images extensively throughout Cape May and the United States, likes to focus on the "natural wonders" of the area. Her images have been used by the Cape May Chamber of Commerce and Cape May Tourism, appearing in New Jersey Life, Yachting Magazine and Newsday.
