Question: I’ve recently moved to New Jersey and have just started playing at a couple Atlantic City casinos. I’ve seen “Hot Seat” promotions in some of their ads in “At The Shore” but I’m not sure what this means. Can you help me out?

Answer: First of all, “hot seats” are nothing like those optional warmers in your fancy BMW. What this means is that — if you have your player loyalty card inserted in a slot machine you have a chance at winning some extra cash, comps or free play. The casino’s computer system is programmed to randomly select a designated number of players at some pre-determined time. If your player card is chosen, you win. Keep in mind, though, that these promotions sometimes are limited to:

• Specific days and times.

• “Invited guests” or a certain “class” of players, e.g., Black cardholders at Revel Casino Resort, or Signature cardholders at a Trump casino.

• Particular sections of the casino such as the high limit area.

In addition, to prevent “squatters” — players who plop themselves down at a machine, insert their player card, “seed” it with $5 and just sit there hoping to be selected — some casinos now require a minimum amount of play before you are qualify to be considered.

If you win, though, be prepared to be singled out — often with great fanfare from a team of casino employees carrying balloons and blowing noisemakers.

This month Golden Nugget Atlantic City is holding Hot Seat promotions in its High Limits Slots Room. To qualify, players must have their 24 Karat Club cards inserted in a machine and play at least $100 coin-in every hour. Fridays between 8 to 11 p.m. and Saturdays from 5 to 8 p.m. Twenty-five winners each will receive $250 in cash.

At Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa noon to 7 p.m. Monday, April 14, one winner will be selected every 14 minutes to receive 1,414 Bonus Slot Dollars. To enter insert your My Borgata card into any slot machine or open a table games rating between 10 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Winners must be present and have 30 minutes to claim their prizes.

Bonus tier credits

In a recent response to a reader’s question about maximizing returns on his slot play, I pointed out that some Atlantic City casinos feature tier multipliers where some players can earn two, three or four times tier credits on designated days.

However, I neglected to point out that Bally’s Atlantic City, Caesars Atlantic City, Harrah’s Resort and Showboat Casino-Hotel essentially offer multipliers every day. Also, unlike some casinos — this bonus is available to all Total Reward cardholders, not just to a specific level of cardholder or certain “invited guests”. And, since all Total Rewards casinos participate, you can earn these bonuses throughout the country, as well as at Caesars Windsor in Ontario.

The minimum daily bonus is 125 tier credits, gained after reaching 500 tier credits during a single gaming day. The bonuses increase to 1,000 after earning 1,000 tier credits, 5,000 on 2,500 earned credits, and 10,000 on 5,000 earned credits. (A gaming day in Atlantic City is from 6 a.m. the first day through 5:59 a.m. the next, but other locations may define this differently.)

Atlantic City’s casinos should consider “stealing” a great idea from one of their competitors in Philadelphia. On gift giveaway days, Sugarhouse Casino encourages it top-level tier card players to valet park. Then, when they claim their gift, it’s delivered directly to their vehicles.
