Sushi chefs Ken Zhang, left, and David Zhang prepare fresh sushi rolls at Tomatoes in Margate, a favorite for many locals.

Tomatoes Restaurant is a Margate icon, says owner Karen Rone. The eatery is known as the beach-town bar and restaurant that stays open - and busy - all year long.

Rone and her husband, Carmen, opened Tomatoes in 1993, first located on Ventnor Avenue, just three blocks from its current location on Amherst Avenue, where it has been for the past 13 years.

"We've been around a long time," Rone says, adding that she and her husband have Tomatoes' countless loyal customers to thank for its years of success, some of whom frequent the restaurant on a weekly basis, if not more often.

"You can definitely count on certain people, in certain seats, on certain nights," she says.

From young to old, folks looking for a good meal or a good time with drinks and dancing, Tomatoes offers an "across-the-board appeal" and serves a "diversified clienete," Rone says.

Its menu focuses on "California cuisine" or "Pacific Rim cooking," she says, which she describes as an infusion of many cultural and culinary influences including Latin, Asian and European.

Rock + Roll Sushi Night

Tomatoes also has a full sushi bar which is "a huge part" of what they do, and is the focus of its busiest night of week, Wednesdays, also known as Rock + Roll Sushi Night.

Rock + Roll Sushi is set for 9 p.m. to midnight Wednesdays and is a "very big locals nights" at Tomatoes, Rone says. The night includes discounted drinks and a select discounted sushi menu at the bar, as well as live entertainment and dancing with DJ Steve O.

Daily happy hour at Tomatoes is 5 to 6:30 p.m. every night of the week, but it just rolls right on through the night until close on Rock + Roll Wednesdays.

Tomatoes hosts live entertainment every night of the week during the summer and every night except Sundays in the offseason.

Performing on Mondays are the Bodesa Brothers, from 8 to 11 p.m., " a live trio that is just terrific," Rone says. On Tuesdays and Thursdays it's DJ Sparkles, and on Fridays and Saturdays it's DJ Steve O.

"DJ Sparkles has an eclectic musical background that's really worthy of a good listen," she says, "and DJ Steve O just brings the party."
