WHO ARE THEY: 10,000 Maniacs were formed in Jamestown, NY in 1981 and began to get the attention of music critics two years later with the release of their debut independent LP “Secrets of the I Ching.” The single “My Mother The War” was a minor hit in the UK, while 1987’s “In My Tribe” remained on the album charts for 77 weeks and helped the band build a large U.S. audience. “Blind Man’s Zoo” was released in 1989, reached No. 13 on the charts and achieved gold sales status. The year 1993 was big for the band, with a performance at the MTV Inaugural Ball for President Clinton and an “MTV Unplugged” performance followed by the departure of lead singer Natalie Merchant. The band continued on with Mary Ramsey on lead vocals.
