Michael Allman

The Michael Allman Band will return home with two shows this weekend.

When Michael Allman made plans to embark upon a mini-tour of the East Coast, two members of his Florida-based band were especially excited. Shawn Paige, guitars, and Sarao, keyboards, will be returning triumphantly to the land of their birth as the band tours up the East Coast.

“I was born and raised in Egg Harbor Township,” explains Paige, who headed to Florida in the early 2000s to pursue a career in the music industry. “I haven’t played in South Jersey since the early 1990s,” though he plans to rectify that soon enough.

The tour, which will take them through North Carolina, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, will make a special stop at the Watering Hole in Mays Landing to perform for what will undoubtedly be a packed house.

Paige, who grew up listening to the classic “Allman Brothers ‘Live at the Fillmore’” on vinyl, is especially excited to return to his roots.

“My uncle used to send me records, like KISS, B.B. King and, of course, the Allman Brothers,” explains the Bargaintown native. “That’s pretty much how I learned, and what inspired me to start playing guitar.”

On Saturday evening, Michael Allman and his band will be performing in Bayville at the “Bleedng Hearts Benefit for Daniel” charity event, in addition to their regular touring schedule.

“The benefit is really the most important thing,” emphasizes Paige, “but I’m really excited about the Watering Hole, too. It’s going to be insane over there. We’ve got Triple X opening up for us; it’s gonna be packed. It’s the closest (to home) I’ve ever played with this band.”

Michael Allman, who is performing songs from his latest release, “Hard Labor Creek,” will also perform several signature tunes from his father’s songbook. The son of Greg Allman may play “Melissa,” “Soul Shine,” and, of course, “Whippin’ Post.”

“We do a 20-to-30 minute version of that one,” explains Paige. “It’s pretty bad ass.”

The band also covers grooving classics from Boz Skaggs and other classic artists. The goal, according to Paige, is to “get the people dancing and grooving.”

The Members: Michael Allman: vocals; Honeyhead: drums; Shawn Paige: guitar; Marc Diaz: bass; Mark Shane: guitar; Lonny Sarao: keyboards.

Coming Up: Catch the Michael Allman Band 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27 at the Watering Hole in Mays Landing, or attend the Bleeding Hearts Benefit for Daniel in Bayville, Saturday, Sept. 28. Tickets for the benefit start at $25.
