The Exceptions are an exceptional cover band for a couple reasons.
Their longevity, having first formed 37 years ago, has made them legends in Philadelphia and the Jersey Shore. They now have ten members, ranging in age from 24 to 62 years old.
Given that history, they've earned the right to slow down a little. However, they not only perform as frequently as ever, but each show is a continuous performance.
"From the second we hit the stage, to when we step off, it's non-stop music," says Phil Valentino, the keyboardist and one of four members who have been with the band for more than three decades.
They also don't stay content with the classics, instead constantly learning new music, practicing two or three new songs per week.
"And we don't just learn it to the CD," says Valentino, of Philadelphia. "We'll take a Maroon 5 song and add horns to make it our own."
That makes their sets a mix of oldies and modern hits, which not only reflects the age range of the band members but also the diverse crowds they attract.
This summer, they are continuing long-running residences at The Deck at Golden Nugget every Sunday afternoon and every Thursday night at The Windrift in Avalon, along with plenty of weddings.
"Every summer we always say we're going to scale it back," Valentino says with a laugh. "But it never works."
