Each year, vacationers come to Wildwood for three things: the beach, the boardwalk ... and the comedy, says Mark "The Don" Vito, owner of Casba Comedy Club.
"People are always telling me summer isn't summer without coming to one of my shows," Vito says.
Located on the corner of Spicer and Atlantic avenues in Wildwood, Casba Comedy Club has been bringing up-and-coming comics to its stage for the past 33 years. About a decade ago, it was completely remodeled to add a 1950s diner vibe to match with Wildwood's Doo-Wop theme.
It's home to comedian Dom Irrera, a six-time nominee for an American Comedy Award, who will be performing Aug. 30 and Sept. 1, and has acted as a stepping stone to stardom for a handful of great performers including Jim Norton and Jim Florentine, Vito says.
"I remember when Jim Norton started out here, he was just a kid, but I kept him working," he says. "I'm not saying I'm in any way responsible for his success, I'm just saying I'm proud to have had him and I'm proud of this place. I think we're one of the only places left on the island that still offers live entertainment."
Come early, stay late:
Casba's Comedy Club's Tin Can Cafe offers an extensive martini menu featuring more than a dozen dessert-flavored martinis as well as select beers, wines and non-alcholic drinks.
Doors open at 7 p.m., the first show starts at 8 p.m. and the second show begins at 10:30 p.m. The bar stays open until 2 a.m. to ticket holders only.
Wait staff service is available during the show with a two-drink minimum.
Dinner and Show Special:
Buy one entree at one of more than a dozen participating Wildwood restaurants and receive one free admission pass to Casba Comedy Club.
"This is probably one of the best promos offered on the island," Vito says. "It's a no-brainer."
