DJ Steve Pfeffer hasn't been a musician for decades to make money, but instead to simply make people move.

"The money's nice," says Pfeffer, 40, of Gloucester Township, "but I actually enjoy playing for people and interacting with everyone."

Pfeffer is originally from Stafford Township, and he grew up in a home where both his parents were DJs. He started performing at parties himself in high school.

He also played drums in different bands for a while, but returned to DJing a couple years ago.

During that time he has always had a full-time job, currently as a sales engineer, but lately he also finds himself playing music in Atlantic City two to four days a week, supplying open-format dance music at casino lounges, clubs and restaurants.

His specialty is being able to tailor his choices to the venue, with The Pool After Dark in Harrah's Resort clearly requiring a different set of songs than Live Bar in Golden Nugget Atlantic City or the former Trump Plaza Beach Bar.

Doing that requires extensive preparation, he says, as well as years of training and modern equipment that allows him to mix different genres during a live set.

He says adding drum loops and other elements to classic songs can give oldies new energy.

For an upcoming special performance at Robert's Steakhouse in Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort, Pfeffer says he is planning for a crowd looking to hear more classic party hits, but he says that can change at any moment, and he will be ready.

"It's just a matter of finding something that you see clicks with people, and then it's like, 'Alright, I'm dancing,'" he says.
