Dutchman’s Brauhaus in Manahawkin, known for its German beer, is shaking things up by adding a Blues/Jazz Night at its new The Upstairs: After Dark.

In celebration of its 60th year, The Dutchman's Brauhaus in Manahawkin has added a brand-new, upscale nightlife venue, The Upstairs: After Dark, featuring live entertainment and specials on the weekends, Fridays to Sundays, and Blues/Jazz Night on Mondays.

The Upstairs: After Dark debuted over Memorial Day weekend. Since its opening, the venue has been bringing in a blend of generations to enjoy its laid-back live music and picturesque atmosphere right on the bay.

Blues/Jazz Night started up in late-June. It's an old tradition at Dutchman's Brauhaus that has been resurrected.

Back in the day, people would come to the Dutchman's Brauhaus to listen to blues, drink cognac and smoke cigars. But this came to a halt when a ban on indoor smoking was put into place. With the The Upstairs: After Dark, which features a connecting outdoor Bavarian beer garden on the bay, Blues/Jazz Night is back.

"As far as I know, it's the only beer garden on the water in South Jersey," says Rick Schmid, one of the four sons of second generation owner Otto Schmid Jr. Rick and his brothers, David, Bob and Bill Schmid, are equal managers of The Dutchman's Brauhaus. Their grandfather, Otto Schmid, a master brewer from Germany, and his wife, Tekla, opened the tavern in 1952. Brauhaus means brewery in German.

Blues/Jazz Night starts at 7 p.m. Mondays, with live entertainment by notables such as Rob Paparozzi, a Grammy-nominated American harmonica player and vocalist from New Jersey; Pat Karwan, a blues and jazz musican; singers and songwriters from Toms River; and Nite Crawlers, a blues/rock band from Long Beach Island.

Mark Your Calendars:

This year's annual Oktoberfest at The Dutchman's Brauhaus will be held the last two Thursdays of September and the first two Thursdays of October: Sept 20, Sept. 27, Oct. 4 and Oct.11.

All four events will feature a full-course German buffet, a roaming accordion player, Rocktoberfest and other German beers, and much more.

This is the biggest event of the year for The Dutchman's Brauhaus, so much so that they have to repeat the festivities four times in four weeks.

The night also features authentic German beers, many of which are exclusive to Dutchman's Brauhaus; Pabst Blue Ribbon, Otto Schmid's first draft beer at the tavern; specialty martinis; single-malt scotches; brandy; and a tapas menu with small portion platters of German and American meats, seafood and vegetarian options.

Weekend entertainment in The Upstairs: After Dark starts at 8 p.m., with live music starting at 9 p.m. and drink specials and giveaways starting at 10 p.m.

Coming Up:

Friday, Aug. 3: 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Trax

Saturday, Aug. 4: 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Shock Wave Collective

Monday, Aug. 6: 7 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Blues/Jazz Night ft. Pat Karwan and Rob Paparozzi
