Can’t get to Paris? Not to worry.
For anyone with the urge to don a beret, Somers Point’s April in Paris weekend is the answer. And while the three-day event is full of things such as French art and French language lessons, one of the big highlights is the performance at Gregory’s Restaurant and Bar by French duo Jac & Co at 7 and 9 p.m. Saturday, April 8.
Made up of husband and wife Jacques and Corrine Pellarin, Jac & Co is a duo with an eclectic music repertoire. While the couple lives in Savoie, France, they perform regularly in Switzerland, as well as the United Kingdom, Germany and now Somers Point.
“We are happy to share some French culture through icons such as Edith Piaf, Charles Aznavour, Yves Montand and Juliette Greco and take the public to St. Germain des Pres in the 1950s and ’60s or the Champs-Elysees,” says Jacques Pellarin, who plays the accordion in the duo. “The public likes to sing along with us!”
Paul Shaffer isn't a lawyer. He's never even played one on TV.
And while Jacques has had a long professional career in music, with more than 10 albums and multiple world tours, the duo of Jac & Co only began in 2011, after the couple had been married for 27 years.
“I began my professional career as a musician in 1985, and I am happy now that Corrine was able to join me in this musical adventure,” Jacques says. “Our children are adults now and we have more time to travel. … This is a great chance to be able to make professional music as a couple.”
With only Corrine’s voice and Jacques’s accordion, the duo is known for its captivating and pure sound, evoking the eternal tunes of France. Playing classic French songs, as well as Jacques’ original compositions, which include tango, Latin music, gypsy music, French songs and soundtracks, Jac & Co have the ability to transport listeners to the dance halls and sidestreet cafés of France’s bygone times.
“With my background in classic music, I tried to create a bridge with traditional accordion music and classic music,” Jacques says. “I wrote many songs in the ‘French cinema’ style for solo accordion, but also for Jac & Co and for acoustic chamber trio.”
And while Jacques is known for his composing, Corinne is revered for her voice.
A few years ago, Kathy Arleth and her husband Nick Regine read about a multi-day “April in P…
“Corrine likes to sing the songs of Edith Piaf because she feels them, especially as an artist,” Jacques says. “These are stories of life … often tragic but with such intensity in music and lyrics.”
While audiences can purchase Jac & Co music on iTunes, we suggest checking them out in person. After all, it’s April in Paris — right here in Somers Point.
