Fred's Tavern may be old - the iconic establishment has been in Stone Harbor since the 1930s - but age is just a number.

The tavern has undergone several transformations over its years to meet its patrons' interests. When it first opened it was a restaurant with a bar, much like it is now. Then in the '80s, it became a nightclub, says owner Tom Hand, grandson of the original owner, Fred Menzel, after whom it was named.

In the early '90s, it converted back to a bar and restaurant, and last year the tavern underwent an extensive remodeling of its interior.

"The exterior is the same, but the inside was totally gutted," Hand says.

The 2011 renovation added a more upscale vibe to the tavern. Today, Fred's Tavern offers both indoor and outdoor dining, year-round entertainment and a secluded bar area with several TVs and the NFL ticket.

The menu is upscale bar food and dinner ends at around 10 p.m., which is when the tavern transforms into more of a bar scene.

Entertainment starts at around 9 p.m. seven days a week in the summer, and Saturdays in the offseason. Performing the next two Saturdays is the Incognito Duo.

Hand says despite Fred's continuous changes, its old tavern feel is still there, which is one thing people love about it.

"We serve a lot of regulars," he says. "60-year-olds have been coming here since they were in their 20s."

Offseason specials:

There's never a downtime at Fred's Tavern, but there are some offseason specials including football specials, happy hours and events.

Fred's Tavern has the NFL Sunday ticket, with food and drink specials on NFL Sundays, including a $5 specialty sandwich or burger (varies each week) and $2.50 Miller drafts.

On Fridays from October to May there's a free food buffet from 5 to 7 p.m. including a variety of fried appetizers and a pasta dish. Tuesdays are taco night, with three tacos for $5.

Fred's Tavern also hosts an annual Christmas party/Toys for Tots fundraiser, a highly anticipated event they prepare for all year long, Hand says.

Last year's event was an ugly Christmas sweater party and this year's will be a white-out party, where all guests are asked to wear all white. The event will take place Saturday, Dec. 15.
