It’s a scene akin to a typical nightclub — the DJ is spinning a set, laser lights illuminate the otherwise-dim dance floor, belly dancers perform on pedestals and intimate leather couches and tables line the room.
But there’s no bar. Instead there’s hookah.
Bluemist Hookah Lounge recently opened in Galloway, filling a local void while adding to a popular growing trend in America.
Its owners, Pakistani natives Mohammad Khan and Mohammad Rana, said hookahs — water pipes that are used to smoke a blend of tobacco, molasses and fruit called shisha — have been a part of the culture and tradition of Pakistan for centuries, but in recent years have grown popular in America.
Realizing the absence of this niche trend in South Jersey, the two men decided to open Bluemist Hookah Lounge in Galloway.
“There was no chill spot for people under 21 (years old) or anyone looking for a different experience then your typical nightclub” Khan says.
Kahn said because of Bluemist’s close proximity to Richard Stockton College, the lounge, which opened on Aug. 8, primarily has been serving Stockton students. However, the owners have seen an eclectic crowd,
Bluemist Hookah Lounge serves more than 250 different varieties of hookah in three types: Alsakher, Starbuzz and exotic in-house varieties.
Prices range from $13 to $20 with all equipment provided. Guests can also reserve private couches for no additional charge.
Khan says some house favorite flavors include the Island Bombshell, the Lemon Drop and Skittles. However, he said they could also make any flavor requested.
“If you want it to taste like a specific candy or something, we can do that,” he says.
Though there is not a bar on-site, BYOB is an option.
Live DJs perform every Thursday and, starting in October, every Friday and Saturday, as well.
On Thursdays, there is also a performance by professional belly dancer. All entertainment starts between 9 and 10 p.m.
