Lucky Dog Tavern has history, specials in Atlantic City

Lucky Dog Tavern is always changing its craft beer menu based on customer feedback.

People sometimes have a hard time finding the Lucky Dog Tavern in Atlantic City, but once they do, they always come back.

"Everyone who comes in here loves it," Assistant Manager Ryan Bonanni says. "We just have to get them to find us and come in."

Lucky Dog Tavern opened about a year ago and is part of the 55,000-square-foot Diving Horse Cabaret & Steakhouse complex, located on side street Mount Vernon Avenue, between Dr. MLK Boulevard and Kentucky Avenue.

The building itself has been a bar since 1904, most recently as the Brass Rail, and it's one of the oldest bars in the city rumored to be a hangout of Nucky Thompson and his crew with history buried deep within its walls.

"We found liquor bottles from like 1894 in some of the walls where they used to hide it during Prohibition times," General Manager Michael DiCarlo says.

Today, the tavern has "a comfortable, casual, basement bar vibe to it," gathering an eclectic array of people from all walks of life.

"You get a little bit of everything down here," DiCarlo says. "There's a slogan that one of our bartenders created for the bar and I think it explains it pretty well: 'A legal speakeasy patronized by bikers, bartenders, tattoo artists, kung fu masters, jedi, pirates, salt of the Earth and the ghost of Muddy Waters.'"

Food & Drinks:

Lucky Dog Tavern has a full bar with six beers on tap, an extensive rotating craft beer selection and a full food menu.

"We're always changing the craft beers in and out, getting a feel for what people like and giving people the opportunity to try something new and exciting," Bonanni says.

The main daily special at the tavern is a free pizza with any drink order any time. Additional specials include 50-cent wings, $1 Bud and Bud Light cans on Mondays and $3 Dos Equis and $4 Jose Cuervo on Thursdays.

Lucky Dog also has a hot wing-eating contest: finish 12 hot wings in five minutes and get $50 in drinks on the house.

Bike Night:

Lucky Dog Tavern will host its first-ever bike night block party on Mount Vernon Avenue 4 to 10 p.m. June 9.

"We have over 400 bikes already coming," DiCarlo says. "We have an outdoor drink permit with a beer garden, live bands and trophies for best bikes."

Admission to the event is free with an after-party to follow inside the tavern until closing.

"If it goes as well as I think it's going to, we're going to do it monthly," he says.
