Paul Wong has been a fixture of Atlantic City's DJ scene for about 14 years, rocking a career he sort of stumbled into.

More appropriately, he was pulled into it, when one night his friend was talking to some girls at a bar and asked him to take over on the deck.

But Wong, of Galloway Township, was hooked, and he eventually became DJ Lu'Ap (his name backward and stylized). He is now a resident performer at Anthem Lounge at Tropicana Casino and Resort and Bungalow Lounge & Restaurant with past performances at everywhere from The Pool After Dark at Harrah's Resort to Mia restaurant in Caesars Atlantic City.

What he liked about the craft, he says, is the experience of both controlling and feeding off the energy of the crowd.

"You get like a high when people react a certain way. … This aggregated energy comes together and you're just like, 'Wow,'" he says.

However, the art of getting a party going is more complex than just picking the most popular songs and throwing them on a playlist, he says. Creating a set with an ebb and flow of excitement serves to create a more fulfilling experience for everyone involved.

"Through the years you learn how to control that," he says. "That's more effective than just straight bangers."

He doesn't have a particular genre or style of music he focuses on. He says he likes to tailor it to the venue and the atmosphere, and most of all seeing what the crowd is doing.

"My key is to keep things familiar but keep things interesting," he says.
