Chickie's and Pete's

Chickie’s and Pete’s, the South Philly sports bar made famous by its beer selection and delicious Crab Fries, recently opened a location on the Atlantic City Boardwalk.

Make your own scene.

After opening in July, Chickie’s and Pete’s is the newest addition to Tropicana Casino and Resort. It’s located right off the Boardwalk, so you get the best of two worlds with all the convenience of a casino sports bar, with views of the beach to boot. There are DJs keeping the energy high starting about 8 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thrusdays, 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. But for the true sports fan, all the important scenes are happening on the giant flat-screen TV’s almost too numerous to count. If there’s a sporting event on TV, it’s on at Chickie’s and Pete’s Atlantic City.

There’s good eats — and that’s not limited to their world-famous Crab Fries and mussels (take your pick, red or white).

Signature dishes at this sports bar by the beach include various types of crab legs — blue shell, Dungeness, snow crab and king crab — starting at $17.99 per pound, hand tossed, thin-crust pizza with baby lobster, and of course some succulent jumbo lump crab cakes. If you’re serious about your crab legs, stop in Wednesdays and pay $29.99 for all you can eat. Plus, the Atlantic City location is the first to feature a raw bar with everything from oysters to sushi. For land-lovers, there are Philly cheesesteaks and hot roast beef or pork sandwiches, plus the usual suspects of nachos, burgers and buffalo wings.

And no one goes thirsty.

This is a bar, don’t forget. To keep the competition interesting, drink specials change daily, if only slightly. Enjoy $3.50 Budweiser and Bud Light drafts all day Sundays, or fill up on Miller Lite aluminums for just $3 during the “early game” from 1 to 4 p.m. On Mondays those Bud drafts are just $2, while Chickie’s and Pete’s keep it interesting on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, when you can get Yuengling imports from neighboring Pennsylvania (Tuesdays) or Heineken and Amstel Light from Holland (Wednesdays).

Have a party, make new friends.

One thing Chickie’s and Pete’s Atlantic City has over other locations is Play 2, a special gaming area meant to attract competitors of a different sort. Play 2 is an interactive gaming space with five semi-private cells, each equipped with Wii, XBox and PlayStation 3 hardware and all the best games. You can invite all your friends and have a gaming tournament, or wander into a room and see who’s there to challenge. The rooms fit 10 to 20 people and you can split that cost between a group, or just strike out on your own and make new friends with common interests.

Stake out your Sunday spot early.

Everyone knows Sundays are for watching football. But if you want the best spot for the afternoon game (and there are so many views here, there isn’t a bad spot in the joint), you’d better get there early. Never fear, Chickie and Pete have you covered, opening an hour earlier on Sundays and offering a Bloody Mary bar with enough breakfast sandwiches, scrambled eggs and chicken with waffles to brace you for all the drinking ahead. For those serious about beating hangovers of various origins, there’s a signature “Crabby Mary” made with a secret recipe of spices; a “Bloody Caesar” with clam juice and garlic; a “Bloody Maria” that incorporates tequila, cilantro and jalapenos; or a “Green Maria” that gets even more crazy with tomatillos, cucumber and that cilantro-jalapeno seasoning.
