It’s not a secret that in this day and age, many of us teens and those much younger probably haven’t written a letter. Snail mail, the old ways are long gone.

Immersed with social media and email from a young age, we have really never needed to do that extra work. With phones attached to our hip, sending a quick note has never been easier.

I’m sure me and many others have never even bought stamps, let alone know where you can get them. Unfortunately, thanks to us and many others, its costing the hard working Postal Service employees their jobs in these hard times. The financially strapped U.S. Postal Service is considering cutting as many as 120,000 jobs.

Honestly, I don’t see the need to send a letter. Sending an email is free, and more importantly — quicker. Want to write a personal letter? It’s easier than ever to scan it and then email it without leaving your house. I’ve never used the post office other than to send big packages … and that’s the only reason I can see in the near future that the Post Service would even remain around.

Facing a second year of losses totaling $8 billion or more, the agency also wants to pull its workers out of the retirement and health benefits plans covering federal workers and set up its own benefit systems. But the loss of mail to the Internet and the decline in advertising caused by the recession have rocked the agency. I would love to be optimistic but I don’t see any light at the end of the tunnel for the Postal Service.

Email me your thoughts at hipple@hipplepatel.com or you can send me a letter the old fashioned way.
