A Senate bill that just passed committee would allow municipalities to post legal ads online rather than in newspapers.

At the risk of sounding self-serving, I hope the bill dies. Not because of the relatively small revenue loss to the business I work for, but because of someone I know. This guy reads the legals religiously to pick up news and get a sense of what's happening in the area. This is an older guy who doesn't own a computer, doesn't want a computer, refuses to touch a computer.

I spoke with him this morning: "There are a lot more out there like me," he said.

Yes, I know that the world is online and this is another way for towns to save money. I know we're going to a paperless society.

And yes, I know I'm talking to people who are already online.

Still, there are some people who don't have and don't want computers. And there are some people who simply can't afford them. And if this bill passes, a guy who embodies the kind of informed, involved electorate we say we want is going to be cut off from the information he deserves to get.

And there are a lot more out there like him.
