The Eagles are still searching for a defensive coordinator to join new head coach Chip Kelly's staff.

The latest candidate to fill the vacancy appears to be Cleveland linebackers coach Billy Davis. ESPN reported Monday morning that the Eagles interviewed Davis over the weekend.

Davis, 47, has experience as a defensive coordinator. He guided San Francisco's defense in 2005-06 and was Arizona's defensive coordinator in 2009-10. Hiring him would also confirm the suspicion that Kelly wants to install a 3-4 defense instead of the 4-3 the Eagles have been using for decades.

Other reported contenders include San Francisco secondary coach Ed Donatell, though he cannot be contacted until after the Super Bowl. Former St. Louis head coach Steve Spagnuolo is also available. Spagnuolo, who previously was an Eagles' assistant coach and the New York Giants' defensive coordinator, was fired last week from his post as New Orleans' defensive coordinator.

Davis also has some ties to the Eagles. His father, Bill Davis, was the team's linebackers coach during the Dick Vermeil era and later worked in the team's personnel department during Buddy Ryan's tenure.

Billy Davis was also in contention for the Eagles' job two years ago when then-coach Andy Reid decided to promote offensive line coach Juan Castillo. Castillo was fired earlier this season and replaced by Todd Bowles.

Neither coach is still with the team. Castillo joined Ravens coach John Harbaugh's staff last week as a consultant and will be their running game coordinator next season. Bowles was fired after this season and was hired to be Arizona's defensive coordinator.

The Eagles have yet to announce any assistant coaches since Kelly was hired to replace Reid.
