Eagles quarterback Michael Vick's latest rib injury is not expected to sideline him for very long.
The team announced Tuesday that an MRI and CT scan performed on Vick revealed no broken bones or fractured cartilage. He was diagnosed with a rib contusion and of the soft tissue area surrounding it.
No timetable was given for his return, but he is not expected to play in the Eagles' final two preseason games. Barring any more setbacks, he should be in the lineup when the Eagles open the regular season at Cleveland on Sept. 9.
Vick was hurt in the first quarter of the Eagles' preseason game at New England Monday when he was hit by Patriots linebacker Jermaine Cunningham. He left the field under his own power, then walked into the locker room for Xrays, which were negative.
It marked the third time in as many years that Vick has hurt his ribs. He missed three games in 2010 with a rib cartilage injury, then missed three more games last season with cracked rib cartilage. The 31-year-old wore a flak jacket toward the end of last season, but it was unknown if he was sporting one on Monday night.
The Eagles are down to two healthy quarterbacks in rookie Nick Foles and veteran free agent Trent Edwards. Backup Mike Kafka is expected to miss at least two more weeks after breaking his left (non-passing) hand against the Steelers.
