The Philadelphia Eagles decided to add some veteran depth at safety Wednesday, agreeing to terms with free-agent O.J. Atogwe on a one-year contract.

Atogwe, spent six seasons with St. Louis, then played 13 games with Washington last season before being released three months ago. Once considered one of the NFL's top strong safeties, he has been slow to recover from a shoulder injury suffered in 2009.

If he's healthy, the 5-foot-11, 205-pounder could challenge for a starting job with the Eagles. Nate Allen and KurtColeman are currently the starters, while second-year player Jaiquawn Jarrett is the top backup.

The 30-year-old Atogwe could potentially provide some stability and leadership to the position. Allen got off to a slow start last season after suffering a knee injury in 2010. Coleman was briefly benched last season, then suffered a torn biceps late in the year. Jarrett, a second-round pick in 2011, had a tough time learning the Eagles' defense.
