The Philadelphia Flyers appear intent on re-signing defenseman Matt Carle.

Winger Jaromir Jagr's future seems less certain.

General manager Paul Holmgren offered a glimpse into the Flyers' offseason plan during a news conference Monday in Voorhees, portions of which were shown on the team's website.

The Flyers' two biggest unrestricted free agents are the 27-year-old Carle and the 40-year-old Jagr. Holmgren said neither can be re-signed yet because next season's salary cap will not be set until July 1.

But the GM implied that Carle will be re-signed soon after that.

"Matt wants to be a part of the Flyers' organization, and we'd like to keep him," Holmgren said. "We can't do anything right now. I've kept in contact with both Matt and his agent. I'm fairly certain that we'll be able to get him signed."

Holmgren said he had not spoken to Jagr's agent since May 10, two days after the Flyers' season ended. Still, he said he'd like to bring Jagr back.

"I think Jaromir brought a lot to our team this year," he said. "I could see him doing the same next year, so I could certainly have interest."

As for the Flyers' potential interest in other teams' free agents, Holmgren said he will explore his options.

"We'll take a peak on July 1 and see what's available," Holmgren said, "and if there's a way to improve our team, we'll take a shot at it."

The strategy could be affected by the ongoing concussion problems of star defenseman Chris Pronger, who has not played since November. Holmgren said Pronger's condition is "the same."

"Good days and bad days," he said.

"Assuming Chris can't play, those are big shoes to fill," he added. "It's hard to find Chris Pronger. I don't know if he's out there."

Still, Holmgren said he likes his defense corps as it is.

"Getting Nicklas Grossman signed (during last season) when we did was a positive step for us," he said. "And if we can get Matt Carle signed, I think that will help us long-term. We've still got (Braydon) Coburn and (Andrej) Meszaros. Kimmo (Timonen) is under contract for one more year - he's doing great, by the way, following his (lower-back) surgery, so we're still in decent shape there."
